What are industrial water storage tanks made of?

Our industrial water storage tanks can be made form one of several materials, depending on your specific application, material requirements, capacity needs and budget. Our standard materials include:

  • Powder-coated carbon steel
  • Galvanized carbon steel
  • Stainless steel
  • Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP)

Each material is paired with either a EPDM rubber, Buna-N or Viton gaskets depending on the application, and either standard, galvanized or stainless steel hardware, which can be poly-capped or fully encapsulated to prevent leaks and corrosion. The types of materials used depend on the contents of the tank, as potable water, non-potable water, contaminated water, wastewater and other fluids have different properties, some of which require enhanced protection against corrosion, chemical reactions or other causes of gasket failure.

What do water storage tanks cost?

Cost depends greatly on several factors, including the type of tank, the materials used, the capacity of the tank, and the specific installation requirements. Bolted water storage tanks often cost less than concrete or welded steel storage tanks, or are extremely competitive, especially when the extra labor, maintenance and overall lifespan of the competing products are considered. Tanks that require stainless steel for food purposes typically cost more than carbon steel tanks. Specific installation characteristics—such as a limited amount of space for the installation or complex plumbing requirements—may also affect the cost.

    Installing Water Storage Tanks

At Gulf Coast Tanks, we install all types of water storage tanks for a variety of purposes, from fire protection to industrial wastewater storage. The first step is to find the ideal location for the water storage tank’s installation. For instance, farmers will want the tank to be near where there livestock feeds, while certain industrial guidelines might dictate where wastewater-holding tanks can be placed.

Once a spot has been chosen, the soil will be tamped down and have all rocks and other foreign matter removed from the area to ensure that nothing interferes with the tank’s base. A minimum of three inches of road based crusher will be added and the soil tamped down again.

The next step is the concrete foundation. Our foundation experts will determine the exact needs for your foundation depending upon the project at hand. This might mean a simple grade band foundation, concrete ring wall, or a complete concrete slab foundation. As a good rule of thumb, this foundation will be at least 24-inches larger than the selected water tank to ensure complete stability. We also recommend instituting a retaining wall circling this concrete base as washout, burrowing animals, and other environmental factors can degrade the base over time.

The Benefits of Underground Water Storage Tanks

Underwater ground storage tanks are the ideal solutions for a variety of situations. From property owners in remote rural areas who need a reliable water system to commercial properties requiring steady water supplies for manufacturing, there are a whole host of reasons people come to us for their water storage needs. Here are a few of the benefits of underground water storage tanks we tell them about:

    • Emergency Scenarios.  Fire suppression tanks are key in areas without access to a municipal, especially in areas of frequent drought. At GC Tanks, we install both underground water storage tanks for potable and nonpotable water use. In emergency situations, having water that can come in contact, both externally and via drinking, with the human body can be a big necessity. Underground water storage tanks will keep potable water at a cool temperature until needed.

    • Environmentally friendly.  Agricultural businesses love underground water storage tanks as it allows them to harvest excess rainwater that might otherwise be wasted or lead to waterfront erosion. Storing such water in underground water tanks allows them to use it for directed irrigation and greywater to save money and lessen their environmental impact.

    • Space Saving.  Installing water storage tanks underneath the ground means that you don’t have to compromise an otherwise flawless landscape nor do you need to compromise your aboveground space.

Investing in Underground Water Storage Tanks

Underground water storage tanks offer a variety of benefits for both residential and commercial clients. Having a fresh supply of potable water on hand enables your facility to better handle extreme weather and natural disasters, as well as expedite operations for agricultural-based businesses.

However, to guarantee potability, it’s important to ensure underground water storage tanks are correctly installed to protect against foreign contaminants. Make sure your underground water storage tank has key safety features like:

    • Full rain protection
